Nor’easter Brings Coastal Flooding, Damaging Winds to Delaware Through Weekend

A nor’easter is expected to continue impacting Delaware through the weekend, bringing strong northeast winds, coastal flooding and the potential for isolated power outages and tree damage.

The National Weather Service said persistent north to northeast winds will strengthen Friday night and remain strong through Saturday night, with coastal areas potentially continuing to experience gusty conditions into Sunday. Along the Delaware and New Jersey Atlantic coasts, sustained winds of 30 to 40 mph are expected, with gusts reaching as high as 60 mph. Farther inland, including much of Delaware, wind gusts of 30 to 45 mph are forecast.

A High Wind Warning is in effect along portions of the Atlantic coast, while a Wind Advisory covers much of Delaware and surrounding areas. Offshore conditions will also deteriorate, with gale-force winds and seas ranging from 8 to 20 feet. Storm-force gusts of up to 55 knots are possible over Atlantic waters Friday night through Saturday night.

Coastal flooding will remain another major concern. Minor to moderate flooding is expected during high-tide cycles through at least Saturday night, with flooding potentially continuing into Sunday. The highest tides are expected Saturday morning and Saturday night.

A Coastal Flood Warning is in effect for portions of Delaware through Saturday night. The National Weather Service said widespread roadway flooding is possible in coastal and bayside communities, and some roads could become impassable. Vulnerable structures could also experience flooding or damage.

The combination of prolonged onshore winds, elevated water levels and rough surf will keep conditions hazardous along the Delaware coast through much of the weekend. Residents in flood-prone areas should be prepared for roads to close during high tide, while residents statewide could experience downed tree limbs and isolated power outages as winds increase.
